Here’s the words from the album cover
Over the years, so much popular song has been written that a lot has been forgotten, possibly through being considered as suitable only for its own time. We chose some of this music to play in our own way, not only because we think it can be popular again, but also because we like it. Some people write their own songs, others collect them while cycling around the countryside - we get ours from old 78’s, sheet music and Hollywood movies.

We found Billy Desmond’s version of Hello! Bluebird on a well worn eight-inch ‘78’ which cost the princely sum of 5p from Nottingham’s Sneinton Market. With a bit of musical licence, it’s possible to sing Bye Bye Blackbird along with this, which raises the question ‘Who copied who?’‘. Dinner for One, Please, James features the mysterious character who has also been found holding ladders steady and not sparing horses. Michael Carr wrote this story of carryings on amongst the upper classes, a bestseller in its day.
Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart made an important contribution to the early Broadway musicals. Blue Room and To Keep My Love Alive both demonstrate Lorenz Hart’s particular skill in producing witty and original lyrics. Another acknowledged master of words was Noel Coward, never a man to use one word where ten would do - his Any Little Fish compares the love affairs of humans with those of animals, and comes down firmly on the side of the latter.
Gloria was first heard by us as a showpiece for saxophone on a 75 r.p.m. recording by the Rudi Weidoefte Trio. ‘Transposition‘ for the guitar proved an interesting challenge. Another unlikely target for three guitars is the collection Great Westerns recorded in ‘Technicolor and Panavision'.

Songs dealing with narcotics are not new phenomena. We have combined Minnie the Moocher with Kicking the Gong Around and, although not under the influence during the recording session, we still manage the occasional lapse into total irrelevance. Shanghai Lil is another song from our Oriental period and was originally featured as a big production number
In the 1933 musical Footlight Parade, One of the stars was James Cagney, showing his talent as a song and dance man. The scene is a bar where Bill, an American sailor, is attempting to find Shanghai Lil. Along with the main story line comes a tap dance and the arrival of the U.S. Cavalry heralded by an appropriate cheer. Another ‘song from the shows’, Triplets, is taken from Bandwagon, there sung by Fred Astaire, Jack Buchanan and Nanette Fabray. The words by Howard Dietz are funny, fast and furious, to say the least.
You Take a Step is a kind of Magical Mystery Tour, telling of a somewhat eccentric journey around the world made by Jack Buchanan in this song of the late 1920’s — an unusual tune to match equally unusual words.
The name of Waiter Donaldson is unfamiliar to many people but he wrote tile music for such well known songs as Makin’ Whoopee, Little White Lies and Love me or Leave me. Another of his compositions ‘Tain’t No Sin, conjures up a picture of the flamboyant dancing of his era and was also popular with the traditional jazz bands of the 50’s. We changed the feel of Derek and the Dominoes’ Layla, normally heard as hard rock, to underline the fact that it is really a love song. A different approach was taken to the Easybeats’ Friday on my Mind, which is a rock song of a more rebellious nature; for this the guitars stayed at home.
