Daquiri

I felt very honoured to be asked by my good friend Harry Walton to be involved in a project to record a batch of my compositions in the Summer of 2007 and I was delighted with the outcome of the session. As a result of this I approached Harry to suggest a further collaboration and was pleased that he and his fine quintet were happy to participate. The present CD contains highlights from the two sessions. A few explanatory notes on the tunes selected appear below.

Ed Marchewicz - Autumn 2007

Consolidation An up tempo bop theme to get things underway....

Café Royal A tune written for the owner of the Café Royal in Nottingham where my first quartet was resident for eighteen months.

Fergus  A jazz waltz named after a cat we once owned.

Cerulean Harry Walton is an accomplished painter in addition to being a fine jazz musician. Cerulean is Harry’s favourite shade of blue.

La Belle Inconnue For Charlotte, a tune written in the French Valse Musette style.

Daquiri1

Portrait in 32 bars A tune dedicated to Harry Walton. Since I don’t paint this particular portrait is executed in music.

Calina Calido (Warm Haze) A Latin tune which evokes a mood of a walk on a calm tropical beach on a warm evening...

Chiaroscuro A style of painting of which features strong contrasts of light and dark. It occurs frequently in the works of Caravaggio and Rembrandt.

Autumn Equinox An altered blues, the alterations being that this one is in a minor key, is in 6/4 time and measures 5 and 6 are pitched a tone lower than is usual.

Tamarind Another tune which incorporates a Latin influence.

Henry  A swift bop tune named after another cat we once owned.

Daquiri An altered minor blues line with a tag. Named after one of the cocktails which was served in the Café Royal.

Moyrus Moyrus is a remote settlement in Connemara on the West coast of Ireland. Mary, my wife Teresa’s mother, spent her childhood years there.

Blues for HW A blues line to relax with at the end of the session
